The child receives many comments from parents such as stop, enough, don’t cry… But what we forget to do as parents and is very important is to teach a replacement behavior that replaces the undesired behavior.
For example, if the child cries to refuse doing his homework , or doesn’t respond to your instructions, we should teach a replacement behavior through teaching him how to ask for a break, or creating a visual schedule to follow a daily routine, or even to refuse in an appropriate way and not through crying or screaming.
If the child acts in an undesired way to access what he wants , it is important to teach him a proper way to request through speaking or through picture exchange system or gestures if he’s nonverbal.
In case we need to refuse what he wants, a very important part of therapy is teaching him to wait and improve his tolerance to the word “NO”.
Finally, if the child cries or shouts to catch your attention, teach a replacement behavior like directly asking for attention such as asking to play with you.
